And for some odd reason, Roman numerals are used to designate the year of production on films. I do okay up to 50, but then things start getting fuzzy for me. I decided it was time for a little refresher on my Roman numerals. The common thread through all of them is that the numerals were developed primarily as a counting system for commerce, with the most popular theory being that they began as notches on tally sticks. Another theory posits that the numerals originated from finger counting. Each finger represented a numeral. A defining and extremely limiting trait of the Roman numeral system is that it lacks a character to designate the number 0. The system also has no way to represent negative or decimal numbers.

The custom of dating according to an era became common in parts of Asia Minor and Syria in the second and first centuries B.C., and was continued under the Roman Empire. In Egypt, the Ptolemies usually dated their money by the regnal years of the king.
Roman numeric system Basic decimal pattern The original pattern for Roman numerals used the symbols I, V. Each marker for 1 I added a unit value up to 5 V , and was then added to V to make the numbers from 6 to 9: This feature of Roman numerals is called subtractive notation. The numbers from 1 to 10 including subtractive notation for 4 and 9 are expressed in Roman numerals as follows: Note that 40 XL and 90 XC follow the same subtractive pattern as 4 and 9.
Similarly, to counting in hundreds: Many numbers include hundreds, units and tens.

World of Watches continues their exploration of watchmaking fundamentals with a look at the merits of numbers versus Roman numerals on watches for men and women. Also included in this selection of choices is preference for numeric or non-numeric watch dials. Both numbers and non-numeric signifiers, such as Roman numerals, can be found on watch dials, which—for many—is just another choice they have to make when selecting a watch.
Roman numerals have been used in watchmaking since the emergence of pocket watches for men in the 16the century. Adapted from the Egyptian time-telling method, the sundial, Roman numerals were adopted by watchmakers during World War I, as they are easier to register at one glance—a much-needed feature for men in combat.
On most of these molds the head of the pin was inscribed with a roman numeral year date and the name of the Marx company around the date. The ejector pin would be placed in the mold before casting and therefore whatever was on the face of that ejector pin head would be cast into the part itself.
The Calendar Act brought about further changes. The Julian Calendar did not correspond exactly to the solar year. The new Gregorian Calendar cut 10 days from the year in adjustment. Other Catholic countries followed and adopted the Gregorian Calendar but England, being Protestant, did not. England therefore remained 10 days behind the New Style Calendar.
By England was some 11 days behind other European countries. So in these days had to be cut out of the year to make the adjustment. Therefore Wednesday 2 September was followed immediately by Thursday 14 September. In Scotland, 1 January became the official beginning of the year in , the day after 31 December Regnal Years Some documents will be dated not by the calendar year but by the regnal year – how long the ruling monarch had been on the throne.
Elizabeth I came to the throne on 17 November , so 1 Elizabeth I means some time between 17 November and 16 November Watch out for documents written in the reign of Charles II. Although he came to the throne in May , after the Commonwealth period, he actually calculated his regnal year as beginning on 30 January , the date of the execution of his father Charles I.

In Roman abacus several grooves were carved into the board along which counters were moved up and down. One counter was laid in each of the upper grooves, while four in each of the lower grooves. Some additional counters were laid on the right to facilitate the calculation of fractions.
Roman numeral system (adapted from Etruscans numeral system) was in use in ancient Rome and Roman Empire for more than thousand years. That system was the main numeral system in Europe until 14th century and then gradually, during the centuries was supplanted by the Hindu-Arabic decimals.
However, much controversy has been stirred in recent years due to the arrival on the market of a rather plentiful number of small coppers which, while in their entirety are missing the key part of the obverse legend needed to positively identify them, share in common several features which seem to leave no reasonable alternative. Some of the controversy is no doubt my own fault since I used the approach in my ERIC series and have provisionally helped others make this attribution.
Nevertheless, over the last few years as more of these coins have shown up my doubts have grown in step. The main logic of my initial observations rested on a single coin, the RIC plate which Numismatik Lanz sold in shown below: At first glance this piece seems to provide a firm foundation upon which to build the case for legend-less coins to be attributed to this reign assuming other details provide a close match.
For one, the fifth century coinage from Rome is utterly miniscule compared to that of the previous century. Secondly, the arrangement of the legend on such a small coin leaves only emperors of short names as possibilities. Based on name length alone it likewise rules out Avitus’s own replacement Majorian. What about Honorius and Arcadius?
Here is where it starts to get interesting. Arcadius is disqualified right away because his death in predates both the type and the degenerate style that will be introduced after the Visigoths pillaged the Roman capital in Honorius, on the other hand, RIC seems to leave out in the cold. The closest match would be catalog number but this is specifically accorded to the larger AE3 denomination which Kent helpfully further annotates that an unusually heavy specimen weighs over 6 grams.
Moreover, he inexplicably assigns this variant a “common” rarity and makes no serious effort at dating besides lumping this phantom as far as I can tell issue to the “later groups” which presumably brackets them only to within the CE date range.

Don’t worry — your e-mail address is totally secure. I promise to use it only to send you Clock Collecting Tips. There are so many styles and types of clocks, made by so many clock makers and from so many countries, that I was totally lost. Over many years, I have learned a lot. I have concentrated on the American clock companies for my collection, so there is much for me to learn about clocks from outside the US. The question I get most from the comment form on this web site is: Some people will see a clock at an antique store that would look good in a certain room of their house, and end up with it that way.

Introduction Conversion Converting dates in the calendar we use into Roman dates is tricky and involves some degree of compromise. The Roman calendar was altered many times as errors in previous calendars were corrected and political considerations led to compromises in those changes. So whether it is the day, the month or the year we convert into ‘Roman’ the final result may end up overall as something a Roman would not recognise. If you want to know something of the history of the calendar read on.
If you just want a potted version and instructions on converting dates go to the conversion pages. History Many things about the Roman calendar are still the subject of dispute. The original sources for the information are few. This guide is based on the best evidence and modern scholarship but it may be wrong in some details.

Lawndale CA Fender’s methods of using serial numbers on steel guitars varied constantly; there is no pattern and there have even been repeated numbers used. The model is a “Custom” – they were reportedly offered from , although the bulk of them were sold between , when the Stringmaster was introduced. Usually the best way to get a rough date on these is by the presence or lack thereof of plates or decals on the body. As this is apparenly a refinish all bets are off. You can check for pot dates, but as Fender purchased huge orders of pots in the 50’s and 60’s it’s only a “as late as” date checker and only if it can be verified by someone who knows how to check for untouched solder joints i.
Unfortunately Fender’s records of steel production, serial numbers, and most parts specs have been lost. We’ve had searches done for dating info and parts specs for the cable-pull pedal steel line to no avail as well. As it’s a hacked triple neck it has zero collectable value anyway, so I’d suggest calling it an early 50’s and enjoying playing it!

Here I will try to tell you about the ‘Date Stamp’ found on most Marx action figures. If you have any information or pictures that I’m missing please let me know – this is a real community effort! General Info “Date Stamps” are really not what you think of when you hear the words. When an injection machine mold is produced you need to design a way for the part to be ejected from the mold cavity before the next cycle begings often separated by a few seconds, or faster.
The most common way is to have a mechanism called an Ejector pin that pushes into the mold cavity, against the molded part, when the cycle completes – pushing the part out of the mold and on down the line. In the case of the Marx Action Figures, the Torso mold cavity needed a large ejector pin. On most of these molds the head of the pin was inscribed with a roman numeral year date and the name of the Marx company around the date. The ejector pin would be placed in the mold before casting and therefore whatever was on the face of that ejector pin head would be cast into the part itself.
The above information is based on my study of molds in general. I have not had the opportunity to see an actual Marx mold in operation so I may be ‘mistaken’ on a few details. The thing to remember is that this ‘Stamp Date’ is not the year the part was cast. Not every country, figure or combination used the dated ejector pin all the time. I will attempt to show you the ejector pin marking and tell you what figure it was used on.

From the 14th century on, Roman numerals began to be replaced in most contexts by the more convenient Hindu-Arabic numerals ; however, this process was gradual, and the use of Roman numerals persists in some minor applications to this day.
